Visit and Explore our Beautiful Parks! To receive a Junior Ranger Patch, complete the following activities (designed for ages 12 and under with parental supervision).

Objective: Bird watching is a fun way for kids to explore nature by learning how to quietly observe birds, identify their colors and sounds, and discover how different birds live, eat, and build nests.

Activity:

  • Click and watch the SciShow Kids video on “Let’s Go Bird Watching”
  • Check out this short video on “Birds in New York State” by videographer Carl Mrozek of birds he saw birdwatching at Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve. Note in your journal the types of birds and animals you were able to identify.
  • Click here to read the “Birding with Kids” article with an adult and plan a birdwatching session. This can be just in your own backyard!
  • Did you know: Our very own Miller Park is an amazing place for birdwatching. Click this eBird link to see birds identified there.
  • In your journal, write the date, location, and what birds you were able to see and identify during your birding adventure.
